The concept study proposes a&nbsp;triangular building that takes advantage of the characteristic shape of the property. The resulting structure opens up to the garden in an embracing gesture around its central tree, while orientating the glazed facade to the south. A generous roof overhang over the glazed facade offers a shaded and protected place to sit outside, and in the summer all windows can open up to create the sense of a porous garden pavillion facing the family home and the garden. Photography - Antonín Matějovský (finished), Martin Žižka (construction) When Zdeňka&nbsp; &amp; Miloš contacted me to build a family home for them in the early spring of 2013, I had already been developing an idea about a circular house plan which spirals upward around a central dining table. The house was built over 3 summers. The first summer of 2016 saw the excavation of the cellar which houses the buildings well, the main water supply, and the laying of the foundations. Miloš, the owner and a wonderfully talented carpenter and violin maker, made the foundations himself with the help of the whole family. The timber framing work carried on until late March of 2017. During the summer of 2017 we inserted the straw-bales into the timber frame, inserted windows, built the stairs and interior partitions made out of a monolithic clay mix called cob. The earth plaster for the straw bales and the cob walls are from the earth which had been dug out for the foundations. In the summer of 2018, we finished the interior plastering with a mix of homemade and Picas clay plasters. The clients moved in in the early winter of 2018-19, and have since been revelling in the way light moves through a circular house throughout the day. <img width="1200" height="1800" width_o="1200" complex at Rue de France in Paris aspires to create a lively urban and civic public space at the ground floor with a terraced building perched on top which transforms into a kind of garden landscape. The central component of the design deliberation at Rue de France is the rejection of a necessity for formal characterisation of volume. The building is woven through three functional and spatial trajectories:- On an wider urban level the north rectangular volume of the building responds to the existing grid while the southern part cascades in a series of balconies which curve to form a semi-enclosed open courtyard as determind by our masterplan for the four buildings along Rue de France. - On a functional level, the design and orientation of the building is determined by the need for growing plants which clean water and produce food, capturing solar energy in the most efficient way possible. - On a civic level the building responds to its position on the major urban artery of Rue de France by offering the street facing facade a multi level commercial zone with a porous ground floor and a large stairway facing the court, usable as an amphitheater. The environmental logic of the arrangement is that whereas the cascading apartments face south to capture solar energy, the commercial zone is tucked beneath facing north, thus shaded and mitigating the need for excessive artificial ventilation. The building is thus not a characterizable single unit, but a multitude of objects with different uses which coexit. The premise of the project is formed by a hypothetical future, where private car ownership becomes obsolete, and the embodied energy in the mass of a car-park structure in the center of the historical fabric of Glasgow is upcycled to a new purpose. The overall ethos of the project is to attempt to uncover an ecological perspective within a uniquely urban historical setting. The core idea for the public realm is excavate the concrete infill between the even structural bays and design a space for an interior garden. I played with the geometries of the main counter, eventually creating a semi cantilevered board supported at the far end by a single tapering leg, cut out from two pieces of oak which were glued at an angle to create additional suppport for the finger joints which attached to the counter board. It is more of an experiment than a product, currently existing as a stand alone piece only. The idea was to mimic the pallet furniture in the way the pieces bulkily clutch to each other while creating a more elegant design version in turn. I was inspired by Danish furniture design, the way the back legs taper back and the way the seat seems to float on the rails which are revealed towards the back. I experimented on mortise and tenoning the seat into the rails. All joints were made with the structural components themselves, except for four pins on each leg, two at the top, fastening the legs to the rail, and two at the bottom where the tapering legs meet.
