Three Houses on the Sognefjord
Kaupanger, Norway
Architecture project - 2024
Size - 150sqm
Materials - Ecococon straw panels, earth plasters, timber cladding
Design - Martin Žižka
The development sits at the edge of the Kaupanger village with views out to the magnificent Sognefjorder. As Kaupanger had once been an important maritime hub for commerce on the Sogne fjord, the design of the houses playfully engages the typology of the hand made clinker boat, a once essential piece of infrastructure for the region, and a testament of its rich cultural and craft heritage. Hence, the houses seek inspiration not only from the form of the clinker boat, but also the level of craftsmanship, knowledge of local conditions and use of local, natural materials.
